Beginning in January of 2011, the state of California set up an enrollment period for child-only health insurance plans. Currently, you can enroll your child in a child-only plan during the month of her birth. For example, if your child was born in July, then you need to enroll her in a health insurance plan during the month of July.
Child Only Health Insurance in California – What You Need to Know
- If you have a newborn, or have adopted a child, you have the month of either his birth or adoption, plus 63 days, to enroll him in a child only health insurance plan in California.
- If you move to California from another state, you have 63 days to enroll your child in child only health coverage.
- If your child loses coverage, due to death of a guardian, divorce, job change, dropped plan, or no longer qualifying for a public health plan (such as Medi-Cal or Healthy Families), then you may enroll her in a child only health insurance plan within 63 days of loss of coverage.
